The Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) has released 4 specifications governing different approaches to 10 Gbps (OC192) implementation. The purpose of this document is to provide a short explanation of each approach and the associated cabling solutions. Optical Connectivity is committed to the VSR (very short reach) application series and provides a full-range of interconnect solutions for this emerging technology, especially in the parallel optics versions of the VSR programs.

  1. OIF-VSR-01.0 (VSR-1)

    Interface: Tx-MTP®
    Rx-MTP®
Cable / Glass Count: Uses 12 fiber - 62.5/125 ribbon each for Tx and Rx Ports
Application: All 12 fibers of the ribbon are used, 10 fibers carry data at 1.25 Gbps; fibers 11 and 12 are used for error detection and parity checks, transmission at 850 nm wavelength, for each direction
Glass Performance: 62.5/125 glass must meet IEC 793-2: 1992 Type A1b & the ribbon cable shall have a maximum differential skew between fibers of 100 ps/m.
To order, request quantity 2 of part number: V23857-C6476-Axxx when xxx = length in meters. One assembly is needed for the Transmit side and the second assembly is for the Receive side.

  2. OIF-VSR-02.0 (VSR-2)

    Interface: Tx - typically SC
    Rx - typically SC
Cable / Glass Count: Uses 2 fiber zipcord cable - 9/125 singlemode fiber for Tx and Rx ports
Application: 1 fiber is used to carry data at 10 Gbps in each direction at the 1310 nm wavelength.
Glass Performance: industry standard singlemode glass is used
For SC duplex assemblies, request JZ-010SSxxxP where xxx = length in meters.

  3. OIF-VSR-03.0 (VSR-3)

Interface: Tx / Rx in one MTP® connector
Cable / Glass Count: Uses 12 fiber ribbon but only 8 fibers are active - 50/125 glass
Application: 12 fiber ribbon format used in a single MTP® connector but 4 fibers operating at 2.5 Gbps operate in each direction (see diagram below) at the 850 nm wavelength
Glass Performance: 50/125 glass must meet ANSI TIA/EIA-455-30B
To order, request part number V23857-B6476-Axxx where xxx = length in meters.

  4. OIF-VSR-04.0 (VSR-4)

Interface: a single fiber each for Tx / Rx - connectors not specified
Cable / Glass Count: Uses duplex fiber, 50/125 glass
Application: 1 fiber is using to carry data at 10 Gbps in each direction at the 850 nm wavelength
Glass Performance: 50/125 glass with different performance levels for different transmission distances
